So, about our public schools...

A great teacher can change a student’s life. And great teachers depend on our collective support for our public schools.

Great public schools require sufficient and stable funding to meet the needs of every student: smaller class sizes in the early years, opportunities for career and technical education in high school, and pathways to careers for students of all ages.

That’s how we bridge the gap to make sure all students get the best education we can offer.

In Oregon, we need universal pre-K to prepare children for school. We need a 21st-century approach that supports science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. And we need to make higher education accessible to everyone who wants to attend college.

And you know what? Our school children can help save our democracy, too.

As a state Senator, I’ve recently had the honor of working with a Holocaust survivor and a first-year Lakeridge student. This amazing pair is working together to bring legislation to ensure that all Oregon students learn about the Holocaust and genocide – so we can learn from our history and stem the tide of hatred in our world.

America has shown it can be a beacon of light in the world against these crimes against humanity – and it’s critical that our next generation understands why and how these atrocities happen, and how we can ensure that they never happen again.

When I look at our public schools, I see young people leading the way on issues like sensible gun safety, civics education, and protecting students from cyber-bullying. They are seeking opportunities to make the best of their lives. And I see hope for the future of our country.

That’s why I’m running to continue to serve Southwest Portland, Lake Oswego, West Linn and Tualatin in Oregon State Senate. That's why the Lake Oswego Review endorsed me for re-election this week. And that’s why I hope to have your support in the election this November.
