Two weeks after I was appointed to the Senate, seventeen students and educators were gunned down in one of the deadliest school shootings in history in Parkland, Florida.

I was immediately flooded with calls, letters, and students marching into my office. They wanted change. As their state senator, I promised these students that I would work with them and submit a bill to the legislature based on their ideas. To empower them to speak their truth and introduce their sensible gun safety solutions into the conversation.

These students are the future. They want to take ownership of their lives and create their own community.

I'm proud of these students – this is their time. We are going to hear them, no matter how loudly the extremists shout.
